“Yoruba history and politics in Nigeria are dynamic rather than static.” Is how author Falola who studies African Affairs described the Yoruba government (Yoruba Identity). Based on this, I would say that religion effected gender roles in Yoruba culture by simply making the people aware of gender and it’s hierarchy in certain religions.įinally, how does the role of gender play into their societies government? To first answer this we need to know what type of government they conduct. At one point in history, a woman must pray to her husband’s Ifa and find her spiritual fate through her husbands (Peel). One consequence of this primary gender being the heads of religion is that the Yoruba people began to establish a hierarchy in religion based on gender (Peel). Christian pastors and Muslim Babalawo were predominately men. In Africa, more specifically, Yoruba, we have to understand that the Yoruba people worship many gods who did not have genders placed upon them (Peel). The influence of other religions started to help differentiate and define gender. What it interesting is that in Yoruban religion, women are typically the most respected of traditional priests (Ember). The largest findings of Muslim and Christians followers are in the Yoruba ethnic group. Fifty percent of Nigeria are Muslims, forty percent are Christian, and ten percent practice ingenious religions (Ember). Let’s explore what the effects of religion has been in regards to gender roles. There has been an obvious increase in polygamous marriages and I think that this stems from the encounter of new religions brought during colonialism. The leader of the Yoruba people, King Ojaja, has three wives and a recent divorce to his would have been fourth wife (). That is not the case today, one prime example of expressing polygamy is the Ooni of Ife. Also according to Johnson, the Yoruba people were traditionally monogamous and polygamy was reserved for the wealthy. One thing that does seem to have changed is that divorce was not a common occurrence in precolonial times and now a days a man has the free privilege to divorce a wife (Johnson). A woman was considered to be a possession of the family that she marries into, being passed to a brother if her husband died or the family having rights to the children she bore (Johnson). A woman’s place in society was once based on her being a daughter of her father and one of the In Yoruba, marriage is expected of each sex at the socially deemed appropriate age, women in their twenties and men in their thirties. Speaking of domestic roles, one interesting place to study is the Yoruba culture’s marriages and traditions in regards to gender roles. In a review of McIntosh’s book, another scholar Insa Nolte, concluded that, “Yoruba women adapted their skills to support more widespread cultural notions as well as continuing their domestic roles” (Nolte). According to McIntosh in her book Yoruba Women, Work, and Social Change, she summarizes that independent roles were played by women on agriculture and trade until colonial ideas about “female professions” changed the career paths of women (McIntosh). I don’t think that they shifted negatively for women, I believe it gave women more opportunity to have careers that they wished. In Yoruba I found that as time has changed and more outside influences were in contact with the Yoruba, the more the gender roles in Yoruba shifted. I found that in over sixteen countries people believe that men have the first right to jobs, that they believe males are more fit for political positions, and that women should have children to be fulfilled (Weziak-Bialowolska). To get these answer, I began to read about the differences in gender normality’s across different countries.

Checking it avoids the usual vertical "TAB" symbol to be printed. When the "Print Tuning" option is not checked, the legend of the " for all Lines" checkbox becomes " No TAB". The " for all Lines" check box causes the tuning to be printed for each staff. This option is incompatible with the preceding one.Ĭauses the tuning to be printed next to the corresponding strings to the left of the first row of tablature. This variable tells TablEdit to adjust the size of the printout to fit within the indicated number of pages. If you choose to define this variable as other than 100%, measure size as expressed in millimeters will, of course, have only relative significance. The available settings range from 33% to 133% of the original size. Setting it to a value other than 100% allows you to increase or decrease the print size by degrees in order to optimize paper use or to increase it for greater legibility, e.g. This setting affects the character and stave/tablature size of your printouts. If the " Fixed Width" option is selected, TablEdit will produce measures of identical width (like those you see on the screen) taking only the intervals of the tablature into account. TablEdit automatically skips over pick-up measures when printing bar numbers. If the option is selected, the " Proportional Note Spacing" value described above has no effect. This generally results in a slightly larger number of pages for the printout. Four or five measures is about right for standard paper sizes. Keep in mind that too high a number of measures per line will result in the tablature "bunching up" and make it harder to read. This allows you to set the number of measures to be printed per line of tablature. To vary the distance between one note and the note following it, insert an offset marker. This allows tablatures to be expanded or condensed to some degree. This value sets the horizontal spacing between notes in both the tablature and the stave. It also allows you to set a specific scale for the overall size of the printout. This dialog allows you to select a variety of elements for inclusion on your printouts. UK is also playing for placement in the NCAA Tournament. “So, to be in that top four is what every team in our league would want to do and it’s extremely important, especially from the pitching side.” “Obviously, if you don’t have to play on Tuesday, that’s another less arm that you have to use and you’re guaranteed to play a couple of games,” Mingione said. That would put UK automatically into the double-elimination portion of the tournament, which is very important, according to Mingione. The Cats are still hoping to get one of the four byes in next week’s SEC Tournament. 3 Florida for a three-game set at Kentucky Proud Park. Kentucky (35-15, 15-12) has several of those accomplishments on the line this week and weekend as the Cats host No. “Whether that’s make the tournament, whether that’s be a regional host, whether that’s be a national seed or the one seed, there’s always another level.” “When you look at just about every team in our league, this weekend, we’re trying to get to that next level,” Mingione said. Nearly every SEC team will be looking to take a step forward in that progression this weekend, the final one of the regular season. Our season and our teams are no different.” “They start at ‘A’ ball, then they want to go to double ‘A’, then they want to get to triple ‘A’, then they want to make it to the big leagues, then you want to stay in the big leagues, then you want be an all-star, then you want to be a Hall of Famer. Much like our players, they want to get drafted and they want to go to professional baseball,” Mingione said. It’s all part of the progression, or taking the next step, according to UK head coach Nick Mingione. The 2023 UK baseball team has its eyes set on even bigger accomplishments. Why does Charles Murray not mention her in his seminal book on the Apollo program (co-authored with Katherine Murray), Apollo: Race to the Moon?.Why isn’t Johnson mentioned in John Glenn’s John Glenn: A Memoir or Alan Shepard’s Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America’s Race to the Moon?.Henson and Octavia Spencer recently were cast).īut the recent canonization of Katherine Johnson and her “untold” contributions to NASA’s incredible achievements (think about it: the Wright brothers were the first humans to fly in 1903, NASA landed men on the moon only 66 years later) stretches credulity. Kennedy’s promise of putting a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s:Īnd Fox 2000 and Chernin are developing Hidden Figures, a movie about the African-American women who helped NASA launch its first space missions (Taraji P. The primarily white Main Stream Media began frenetic virtue-signaling with the #OscarsSoWhite movement. NASA, along with the companies that performed contract work during Apollo, was a reflection of society’s workforce in the late 1960s - mostly white, mostly male.īut NASA’s website now reports that Katherine Johnson, a blue-eyed, light-skinned black female,Ĭalculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space…even after NASA began using electronic computers, John Glenn requested that she personally recheck the calculations made by the new electronic computers before his flight aboard Friendship 7 - the mission on which he became the first American to orbit the Earth.” Historians of the space program recognize the awful truth: But it is part of an insistent revisionist history of NASA, which was in fact almost entirely staffed by whites until the Apollo program was shuttered in the early 1970s. With Glenn’s death, we will never know if this conversation ever took place. Glenn was supposedly asking for one more check before his flight into space - a review of the orbital trajectory generated by the IBM 7090 computer. If she says the numbers are good, he told them, I’m ready to go.” “Get the girl to check the numbers,” said the astronaut. In the book on which the movie is based, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, by Margot Lee Shetterly, Glenn is quoted as having said this of Katherine Johnson, the black female brain allegedly behind NASA’s greatest glories. And with Glenn’s death goes the possibility of refuting one of the stranger tales born in the Current Year and poised to become the definitive story of the Mercury and Apollo missions: the Christmas Day-scheduled movie Hidden Figures’ “untold true story” that black women were the real force behind America’s space exploration. Glenn, a Marine fighter pilot in WWII and Korea, was the first man to orbit the earth in 1962. Johnson died on Februat her home in Newport News, Virginia at the age of 101.John Glenn’s passing at the age of 95 is just another reminder that the era of infinite possibility is sadly passing away. She was included in the BBC series 100 Women the next year. In 2015, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was the first women to attend an editorial meeting at NASA. Katherine Goble Johnson wrote 26 research reports. Johnson also did calculations for plans for a mission to Mars. Her calculations were critical to the success of these missions. She made it possible for many space flights such as Project Mercury, including the early NASA missions of John Glenn and Alan Shepard, and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the Moon, through the Space Shuttle program to happen. She was also known for accuracy in computerized celestial navigation. She was known for her work on the United States' aeronautics and space programs where she worked with the early application of digital electronic computers at NASA. Katherine Johnson was 1 of the first 3 black people allowed to study at West Virginia University, which before that was officially racist and did not let black people be students. She finished schooling at a very early age. Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson (Aug– February 24, 2020) was an African American physicist and mathematician.
